Worth the walk

Everyone wants the best parking spot. Typically, the best spot is closest to the destination (the mall, the park, the school, the gym). This simple idea rewards those drivers who park furthest from the destination. They get protection from sunlight, rain or snow, keeping their car cool and dry. What's more, they get energy from the extra exercise and fresh air they receive walking to their destination. This canopy would span the back parking spaces of the parking lot. It could be used for advertising space for either the destination or for major marketers.

Every year millions of batteries get thrown into the garbage. It creates tons of garbage and the heavy metals contaminate the ground water. Batteries can easily be recycled, but not everyone does that. The solution is to make it fun to return batteries by using the children’s game ‘Tower of Pisa’. The goal of the game. The player has to add as many batteries to the different levels of the tower. Since the bottom of the tower has a slightly rounded form, the tower has a tendency to tip over if it is not properly balance.

People are crossing the streets and ignoring the traffic lights every day. Why? Maybe they don't have much time, they don't care or they just don't want to wait. Probably because it's no fun to wait. But what if there is a fun way to wait? This is where the "concert-traffic-light" comes in. In front of a traffic light there is a floor sticker with electrical sensors underneath. Each sensor stands for a position in an orchestra, e.g. a violin. By standing on one sensor this particular instrument begins to play.

The Vending Machine Project

Our entry is a sweets vending machine that teaches social responsibility. It gives you the choice of how much you pay. The amount you pay doesn't affect the amount of sweets you get, but the amount of sweets the next people will get. The change is small but cumulative. If people are selfish and pay less money, at the end of the day the machine will be dispensing a very small amount of sweets. If people work for the greater good, at the end of the day they'll be getting lots of sweets for their money. Inskickad av Euan Mils.

Guess the Right Weight

In cities we encounter the problem of drivers not stopping at pedestrian crossings if there's no red light. This idea will prove that encouraging drivers with a little fun test results for the better and many more will stop. The idea is very simple: drivers are encouraged to guess the right weight of the pedestrians that are waiting to cross the street. When a pedestrian is waiting to cross, a big sign could be read by the drivers. This will say: Guess the Right Weight. The driver will stop to see if he/she can guess the weight of the pedestrian or pedestrians that are about to cross.

We are proposing a carnival-type game called the Butt Launcher which will replace the fun of flicking butts on the ground with the fun of firing butts at antique tin toy characters in a circus tent. Players will be rewarded by points based on the values on the toys and audio sounds such as childrens' voices saying "Quack! (tee hee)" or "Moo" or other sounds based on the toy struck with the butt. The antique appearance of the Amazing Butt Launcher will intrigue and amuse people inundated with sophisticated digital gadgetry. Butts will be collected in a fireproof bin in the bottom of the unit.

Recycling is getting more and more wide-spread. We will have learnt already how things are possible to be reused, how they should be sorted and where they should be put. However, more attention should still be paid to the recycling of batteries. We all use appliances for which batteries are needed. But when the batteries run down, what do we do with them? Sometimes we take them and throw them away in a box or a bin somewhere in an electric appliance shop. Why not playing a bit when throwing them away, though? All of us have once played Tetris, so why not playing it with run down batteries?

Waiting at crosswalks frustrates all of us, more or less often. We're all in a rush at sometimes and don't feel like waiting. But lots of accidents happen because of jaywalking. How can we make waiting at crosswalks more fun?

My proposal for the problem of abandoned and broken glass in public places of meeting is inspired to Bruno Munari's projected painting and at the same time to a popular game of our childhood: the kaleidoscope. So, throwing the glass bottles in a special container made of a "glass crusher" and of a suitable projector, we can create several compositions subsequently. A downright "open work" in continuous transformation thanks especially to the people - often young people - that won't be anymore "only" responsible citizens not polluting, but also active part and creators of pictorial works.

Essentially a kids’ playground roundabout, with a large Archimedes screw within. A mixture of a mincer and the idea behind the African water pump concept. Using the energy of turning the roundabout (geared down if necessary) the lightweight, highly compressible materials are packed ever more tightly. Possible enhancements could include a facility to extract the end result in bales, thus enabling a never-ending constant feed process.

A guillotine, if one designed to crush rather than cut. The weight of the crusher will need to be pretty significant, so the motive force to elevate it is a geared ratchet (cool sound) powered by pedaling a bicycle. One at the drop point, a can (or collection) is placed underneath to be flattened. Once so squished, a trapdoor can be activated to drop them into the receptacle below.

A pyramid with 3 segments n line (or more if other glass colours are required to be separated) for clear, brown, green. Above these is a series of tubes, rotating about a centre axle, spaced at equal intervals. These are ‘loaded’ at the bottom arc, and then rotated to fire in the hole position at the top by a ship’s wheel. You 'load' glass into the tube. The wheel is then used to rotate it upright to the highest position over a protected hole in the container below.

Your kid got tired of that old toy and keep asking you to buy something different. To encourage them to exchange the old for a different one, just take them to the Magic BoXchange and they will learn that an old thing can be recycled. All they have to do is to insert the old toy inside the box, wait a little bit, and surprise: a different toy will show up on the other side of the machine. You can choose between boys and girls toys', and if they are not satisfied they can keep on exchanging it. Submitted by Silvia Noronha.

A long tube built into a slider leading from a side easy insertion level to a point just over cone leading to the base centre. At top in interior is a mangle crusher feeding into and old paper shredder. You 'load' PEP bottles into the tube. You then slide it upright (using screwed in 330ml bottle handles) to drop into the cone. This action activates the blade, only once the tube is well out of reach. The shredder drops the shards into a cone-shaped pile.

Uses a big Perspex dome with a long tube built into a slider leading from a side easy insertion level to a point just over cone leading to the base centre. Like a telescope observatory. At base centre in interior an old wood chipper motor/blade or shredder, geared to be connected to a cycle-powered input. You 'load' PEP bottles into the tube. You then slide it upright (using screwed in 330ml bottle handles) to drop into the cone.

We often think that public bathrooms are a dirty mess, and most of the time we are right. One of the things that contributes to it, is people peeing on the floor. Sometimes they are just lazy, irresponsible or drunk, etc. So to help on the 'pee' problem it would be nice if we could play a little game to give all the guys some focus while relieving themselves. It would work like the famous GENIUS® game, having it installed right in the middle of the public urinals. The more you hit on the right colors more points you'll get. And I guess the more you had to drink longer you will play.

There is a trash lays on the ground. If someone picks it up. There will be spot light lighting on that person, the sound of applaud arise, and a microphone comes down from above. So that person can thank his/her parents who educated him/her so well. The point is to create a new experience of pleasure from a bad experience. So next time, when that person ever sees a trash on the ground, will reminds him/her this fun experience. Submitted by Elim Cheng.

It's art you can walk on! It would be like going to an art gallery with sunshine, bird song and in comfortable sneakers! I am proposing this installation as a means to get people active. It would manifest itself in the form of a locked glass-top box embedded into the ground with artwork inside. These could be fitted on popular and even obscure walking trails in and around the city that draw people back to walk them again and again to see what’s new.

I want to arise the awareness of the fact that everyone needs to feel they've been needed, and it's ok to admit we're needy sometimes. To do that, I made two "needy objects", they need the owner's attentions to make them work. One is an alarm clock, to stop the alarm, the owner needs to hug it. The other one is a speaker, the volume will go crazy when the owner is not around. The owner needs to pet it to make it calm down. To see more: http://ineedyoutoneedme.com. Submitted by Elim Cheng.

The object of the game is to insert cans inside a huge see-through Piggy Bank to collect it. A bling bling sound play for each cans inserted and the piggy bank indicate the weight level (skinny to big) of the metal collected. So, people can figure out the impact of the metal collected on the environment if its not the case. Submitted by Sandrine.
